A brief glossary on box spring beds, continental beds and American beds

Multiple springs, optimal support properties, comfortable entry height – the advantages of the box spring bed result from its very special construction. But where do the different names come from? Box spring bed, Continental bed, hotel bed, Scandinavian or American bed – do all these terms mean the same sleeping system or are there differences? And which bed is the right one for me?

Where does the box spring bed really come from?

The box spring bed was developed in the USA – for decades, people here have relied on the bed with an innerspring box, which combines an all-round cosy appearance with unique lying comfort. The name is derived from the English word „boxspring“. „American bed„is merely another name .The same applies to the frequently used term „hotel bed„. It originated when luxurious hotels began to rely on the special comfort of the box spring bed. Sometimes the term „Scandinavian box spring bed„ is also used. This refers to a box spring bed with topper or comfort overlay – this form of box spring bed has a long tradition in Scandinavia, for example in Finland, where FENNOBED also originated.
